Alabama Rot ...

Sadly, there has been a reported case of Alabama Rot in Devizes in the last 48-hours. It's not been made clear from the reports, where the dog has been walked.

Alabama rot, also known as CRGV (cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy), is a very rare, potentially life-threatening disease that blocks and damages the blood vessels in a dog’s skin and kidneys. Affected dogs often develop ulcers or sores, usually on the bottom part of their legs, but these can appear on upper parts of the leg, in the mouth, on the tummy, on the snout - basically, anywhere - and generally go on to develop kidney failure, which is often fatal.

We would advise all dog owners to diligently wash down your dog's feet and legs after each walk, especially if your dog has walked in puddles and to check your dog daily for any red sore spots/lesions. If there has been a change in your dog's behaviour - increased thirst/urination, vomiting, seizures, a reduction in appetite and lethargy, then please take your dog to the vet immediately. By acting fast, you have a greater chance of saving your dog's life.
